If you are a fan of AMC's hit show Breaking Bad, you probably remember one of the most important visual elements of Heisenberg - his hat. Whenever Walter White became Heisenberg, he would wear his black pork pie hat and transform into his darker persona.
Most TV show characters have their costumes and looks well planned out. A little secret that most people do not know about Mr. White's pork pie hat is that it wasn't originally part of Heisenberg's look.
The infamous black fedora was given to Bryan Cranston to protect his newly shaven head from the sun's heat. Since they were filming under really hot temperatures, they didn't want Cranston's head to burn and turn red - not a good look on camera!
To make sure Cranston's head was protected and that Walter White looked good too, the costume designer added the pork pie hat to the ensemble. It was a perfect fit and became the accessory that defined Heisenberg!
Made by Goorin Bros., the hat is made of 100% Texas Rambouillet sheep wool felt, with a hand-tacked grossgrain ribbon. The company commemorated the show's final season by releasing limited "Heisenberg" hats in yellow boxes, and sold it for $149.
The original "Heisenberg" hat that Bryan Cranston wore has now been turned over to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, joining other iconic TV and movie props.
