Cowboy hats dates back to the time of the American Civil War. The first designs of the hat did not have the distinct style that it has now.

Boss Of The Plains

The first cowboy hat was designed by John B. Stetson - a famous hat manufacturer back in 1865. Stetson used to craft his first hats from the fur of small animals and referred to his creation as the 'Boss of the Plains'.

Over the years, the hat has gone through several design modifications. In the 19th century, the Mexicans redesigned it with a taller crown and wider brim. The edges were curved upwards and started to form its distinct shape.

Cowboys Used To Wear Derby Hats

It wasn't until the Stetson became popular in the end of the 19th century when cowboys started noticing the Stetson. Before its rise to fame, the cowboys' choice of hat was the derby hat - also known as the bowler hat.
